Kota Kinabalu: Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew announced that two international flights would fly direct to Sabah next month
Xiamen Airlines is set to resume its direct flights to Kota Kinabalu starting June 27 and the inaugural Shanghai-Tawau flight will commence on June 28.
Speaking to the media after launching the “Bayu Seni: Sabah’s Ethnic Cross-Cultural Digital Exhibition” at Imago Shopping Mall, here, Liew said both flights would operate three times a week.
The event aimed to celebrate the fusion of artistic talent, culture, technology and innovation across the BIMP-EAGA region.

The theme of this year’s event, “Indigenous and Experimental”, highlights the rich heritage of indigenous communities and the commitment to cultural innovation and technological progress.
Over 10 visual artists and nine filmmakers from across the region were featured, each bringing unique ideas and voices.
“These participants represent the future of art in the BIMP-EAGA region and contribute to the vibrant preservation of cultural heritage and artistic innovation within the communities,” she said.
The collaboration with the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) has been instrumental in organising the Creative Industry Talk Bayu Seni, which plays an important role in developing regional talents and enriching the festival with informative discussions and learning opportunities.
This collaboration also positions Sabah as an attractive destination for filmmakers and tourists, contributing to the growth of the cultural and economic landscape.
The partnership with the Sabah Creative Economy and Innovation Centre (Scenic) has enabled the incorporation of cutting-edge Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies into the exhibitions.
“These technologies enhance the visual experience, engage the senses in new and exciting ways, and promote technological innovation in other sectors,” said Liew.
