In 2022, a total of 13 training programmes were implemented involving a total of 462 people.

The allocation for training in 2023 was RM200,000.

Read more As of June 2024, six training programmes have been implemented involving a total of 517 native leaders.

This was disclosed by Mohamad Hamsan Awang Supain (Umno - Sungai Sibuga), who is Assistant Minister, at the State Assembly Sitting on Tuesday.

Hamsan was responding to Jannie Lasimbang’s (DAP – Kapayan) question as to how many native leader training programmes were held from year 2022 to 2023 and the allocations provided.

She said it (allocation) could not possibly cover the more than 3,000 Sabah native leaders, village chiefs and Native Court personnel.

“I believe after three to five years of service, there would be a proper selection of native leaders, including them being subject to interviews based on experience with clearer guidelines” she said.

Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam (PBS - Kundasang), who is also Minister of Local Government and Housing, said the Ministry is in the process enacting the appointments.

“The Sabah Native Affairs Department is currently checking the types of works carried out by the native leaders.

“Training courses are spread throughout the year annually. We hope that in 2 to 3 years all 3000 over leaders can be well trained. We would see that maybe those who have already taken the course would no longer have to and so the focus will be on the new intakes,” he said.

(GRS-Sindumin) Datuk Dr. Yusof Yacob meanwhile suggested agencies like the National Institute of Public Administration (Intan) can help expedite the training by holding them multidistrict.
