- The Independent Office for Police Conduct has launched an independent investigation into the Metropolitan Police after the force failed to forward child sex abuse allegations against the Duchess of Sussex’s father, Thomas Markle Snr, to overseas authorities in 2019.
- The Met Police handed a letter containing the allegations to Meghan for security awareness, but admitted it did not share the information with law enforcement in the relevant countries.
- Mr Markle Sr, currently recovering from surgery in Florida, strongly denied the allegations, describing them as “sick lies” and saying he has nothing to hide.
- An IOPC spokesperson said: “Following a voluntary conduct referral from the Met Police, we have decided an independent investigation is required into its failure to pass on allegations of serious offending, contained in a letter it received in 2019, to relevant overseas authorities at the time.”
- The Met misplaced the original 2019 letter, which was provided back to them by Meghan, who is reportedly upset and frustrated by the force's response.
