NEW DELHI, Sept 15 — An apex panel under India’s Defence Ministry on Friday cleared the acquisition of weapons and equipment worth 450 billion rupees (US$5.4 billion) from domestic suppliers.

The proposals cleared by the Defence Acquisition Council include procurement of 12 Sukhoi Su-30 MKI multi-role fighters and Dhruvastra short range air-to-surface missile for helicopters.

The Su-30 MKI is made by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited under a licence from Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation.

It also granted initial clearance to acquire a number of other military systems, including armored vehicles, survey vessels for the navy, radars and artillery gun-towing vehicles.

One proposal is for upgrading avionics for the Dornier multi-purpose light transport aircraft.
