Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday welcomed the understanding reached between the United States and Iran to end the conflict in West Asia, expressing hope that its implementation would help restore peace and stability in the region and pave the way for a sustainable final agreement on unresolved issues.

In a post on X, Modi said the conflict had caused serious economic disruptions across the world and resulted in loss of lives in several countries.

“I welcome the understanding reached between the United States and Iran on ending the conflict in West Asia, which has caused serious economic disruption across the world and led to loss of life in many countries,” the Prime Minister said.

Modi expressed hope that the implementation of the agreement would contribute to regional stability and ensure the smooth flow of maritime trade.

“India hopes that the implementation of this understanding will help restore peace and stability in the region and ensure the freedom of navigation and commerce,” he said.

The Prime Minister also underlined the need for the remaining issues between Washington and Tehran to be addressed through continued negotiations.

“We look forward to deliberations on the remaining issues reaching a sustainable final agreement,” he said.

Modi’s remarks came hours after the United States and Iran announced that they had reached a peace understanding providing for an immediate cessation of hostilities and the reopening of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. The proposed accord is scheduled to be formally signed in Switzerland on June 19.

India has closely followed the crisis in West Asia, which disrupted one of the world’s busiest energy corridors and directly affected Indian interests. Three Indian mariners were recently killed in attacks on commercial shipping during the conflict, prompting New Delhi to lodge strong protests with Washington and repeatedly call for the protection of civilian vessels and freedom of navigation.

The Prime Minister’s statement signals India’s support for the diplomatic breakthrough while underscoring the importance of resolving the outstanding issues that continue to surround Iran’s nuclear programme and the long-term security architecture in the Gulf.
