A 53-year-old Indian national has been charged with murdering a fellow countryman in a Kepong back alley earlier this month.

KUALA LUMPUR: A homeless Indian national was charged at the Magistrate’s Court here today with murdering his compatriot in Taman Sri Sinar, Kepong two weeks ago.

S Thangaraju, 53, is accused of murdering 60-year-old Paleni in the back alley of an optical shop along Jalan Lang Kuning between 11.33 pm and 11.47 pm on March 17.

The charge was framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.

The charge was read to the accused in Tamil before Magistrate Aina Azahra Arifin, to which he nodded in understanding.

No plea was recorded from the accused as murder cases fall under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

Deputy public prosecutor Hench Goh prosecuted the case, while the accused was unrepresented.

The court has set June 10 for the case to be mentioned again.
