Indian National Killed in Kuwait Airport Attack as Kuwait Blames Iran

JAKARTA - India’s Ministry of External Affairs condemned the June 3 attack on Kuwait International Airport after an Indian national died and several other Indian nationals were injured. Kuwait’s health ministry said hospitals received 63 injured people after the incident, including civilians and travellers.

Seven patients underwent urgent major surgery, according to a Kuwaiti state-owned news agency report. The injuries included shrapnel and blast wounds, fractures, head injuries, brain haemorrhages, amputations and smoke inhalation. Patients were distributed across seven public hospitals.

Kuwait’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation said missile-and-drone strikes hit Terminal 1, causing casualties and damage to airport facilities. Air traffic was suspended and incoming flights were diverted while technical teams assessed the damage. Kuwait Airways and Jazeera Airways later resumed flights after safety measures were introduced.

“We condemn the attack on the Kuwait International Airport today in which an Indian national has died and several of our nationals are injured,” India’s foreign ministry said. “We again call upon parties to cease such attacks.”

Kuwait’s authorities blamed Iran. The country’s defence ministry said hostile drones struck the airport after Kuwait came under Iranian aggression. Kuwait’s foreign ministry said Iranian attacks had targeted civilian facilities, including the airport and diplomatic missions.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps acknowledged attacks on Ali Al-Salem Air Base in Kuwait and the headquarters of the United States Navy’s Fifth Fleet in Bahrain. It later denied targeting Kuwait airport’s passenger terminal and claimed that a failed U.S.-made Patriot interceptor caused the damage. U.S. Central Command rejected that account and said Iranian drones had deliberately targeted the airport.

The airport attack adds to civilian deaths reported in Gulf states outside Iran during the conflict. Akashvani reported back on April 1 that a Bangladeshi national died after shrapnel from an intercepted drone struck a farm in Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates. India’s state-owned public service broadcaster said the death toll raised the UAE toll since the war began to 12, with most fatalities caused by falling debris from interceptions.
