Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded a two-day official visit to Malaysia, with leaders focusing on enhanced trade and a new strategic partnership
SEPANG: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi departed for home today after a two-day official visit aimed at strengthening ties with Malaysia.
He was seen off at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport by Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan.
Modi received a ceremonial send-off featuring a guard of honour from the First Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment.
About 100 local students waved flags as cultural performances showcased Malaysia’s diversity to mark his departure.
Earlier, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Modi witnessed the exchange of 11 Memoranda of Understanding covering various sectors.
Anwar said collaboration will grow following the elevation of bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership last August.
“India is a key partner for Malaysia,” Anwar said during a joint press conference at Seri Perdana.
He highlighted expanding collaboration in trade, investment, education, technology and tourism.
Total bilateral trade reached RM79.49 billion in 2025, demonstrating strong economic momentum.
Malaysia’s exports to India amounted to RM52.3 billion, while imports totalled RM27.19 billion.
Key Malaysian exports included palm oil and electrical products, with imports comprising agricultural and petroleum goods.
The relationship is underpinned by a strong Indian diaspora community of about 2.9 million people in Malaysia.
