With nearly 88 per cent of railway ticket bookings in India now taking place online, the Indian Railways’ digital ticketing ecosystem has witnessed a major transformation since the introduction of internet-based ticketing in 2002.

At the centre of this digital shift is the RailOne mobile application, which has emerged as one of the fastest-growing railway service apps. Since its launch in July last year, the app has recording more than 3.5 crore downloads.

Meanwhile, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had chaired a high-level review meeting and directed officials to ensure that passengers do not face inconvenience during the transition from the existing 40-year-old railway reservation system to the newly upgraded platform. Union Ministers of State for Railways V Somanna and Ravneet Singh Bittu also attended the meeting.

The RailOne app has gained popularity among passengers for its integrated and passenger-friendly services. Besides providing railway-related information, the application helps users resolve complaints related to ticketing and other railway services.

One of the app’s most appreciated features is its AI-based waitlist confirmation prediction system. Introduced earlier this year, the feature informs passengers whether their waitlisted tickets are likely to get confirmed. According to railway data, the accuracy of these predictions has improved significantly – from 53 per cent earlier to nearly 94 per cent now.

The app offers a comprehensive range of railway services, including booking, cancellation and refund facilities for reserved, unreserved and platform tickets. It also provides real-time updates on waiting list status, train schedules, live train running status, platform details, coach positions and passenger assistance through Rail Madad.

Passengers can additionally order food during their journey through the app, with meals delivered directly to their seats. Owing to these convenience-oriented features, the RailOne app continues to witness rapid growth in usage across the country.

According to official figures, nearly 9.29 lakh tickets are booked daily through the application, including 7.2 lakh unreserved tickets — a category which also includes platform tickets — and 2.09 lakh reserved tickets.

The app has also received a strong response across both Android and iOS platforms. Of the total downloads, 3.16 crore have come through the Google Play Store, while Apple devices account for 33.17 lakh downloads.

The railway reservation system, originally introduced in 1986, has undergone several minor upgrades over the past four decades. However, officials said the system has now been completely overhauled with state-of-the-art technology and substantially enhanced capacity to cater to the growing demand for online ticket bookings.
