Indians become Australia’s largest migrant group

  • India-born individuals have become Australia's largest migrant group, surpassing those born in England for the first time.
  • As of 30 June 2025, 971,020 India-born people resided in Australia, making up about 5.2 per cent of the nation's population.
  • This surge in the India-born population contrasts with a steady decline in the number of England-born residents over the last decade.
  • Overall, Australia's overseas-born population reached 8.8 million in 2025, accounting for 32 per cent of the country's 27.6 million inhabitants.
  • The increase in migration has become a political issue, linked to Australia's housing shortage and fuelling anti-immigration sentiment and support for populist parties.
