Deputy Economy Minister Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib has highlighted the importance of registering in the Main Database (Padu) system to access government aid and subsidies. She mentioned that while registration is not mandatory, it is highly encouraged, especially for citizens aged 18 and above. Hanifah also mentioned that the government can use alternative methods, such as integrating data from various public sector agencies, to channel aid to those who are not registered in Padu.
Hanifah made these statements in response to a question during the Dewan Rakyat session. She emphasized the need for cooperation to increase Padu registration, noting that as of March 12, 27.4% of citizens and permanent residents in Malaysia have already registered with the system.
To facilitate registration, the government has set up Padu counters at various locations, including Digital Economic Centres, Urban Transformation Centres, Rural Transformation Centres, health offices, parliamentary service offices, and state assemblymen offices.
Regarding data security, Hanifah assured that the government implements measures to safeguard data stored in the Padu system. These measures adhere to guidelines and processes led by the National Digital Agency, including security protocols outlined by international bodies such as the Open Worldwide Application Security Project and the Centre for Internet Security.
Hanifah's remarks underscore the government's commitment to ensuring that all eligible individuals have access to government aid and subsidies. She reiterated the importance of Padu registration for those who wish to benefit from these programs, emphasizing the government's efforts to provide alternative channels for assistance to those who are unable to register in Padu.
It is pertinent to mention that in early January 2024, the government launched PADU, a centralized database hub for all Malaysians. As of early February 2024, reports indicate that only 2.38 million Malaysians have registered in the system. The government has set the registration deadline for 31st March 2024.
PADU's primary goal is to improve the targeted distribution of government benefits. It consolidates and updates data from various government departments to ensure that aid, subsidies, and other forms of assistance are distributed accurately.
Moreover, PADU provides certain ministries with access to important information regarding Malaysians' income and wealth. This access is beneficial for planning and implementing various policies.
