JAKARTA – Indonesia and Albania have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the placement and protection of Indonesian migrant workers, with both governments aiming to implement the agreement by the end of 2026.
The agreement, signed on July 30, is expected to be followed by technical arrangements and business cooperation initiatives to facilitate the safe and regulated recruitment of Indonesian workers in Albania, as reported by Antara.
Albanian Minister of Economy and Innovation Delina Ibrahimaj said both countries are moving quickly to translate the memorandum into concrete action.
"I really hope that, following this memorandum, the Minister (Minister for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers Mukhtarudin) will be able to visit Albania so that we can follow up on the memorandum.
"And as soon as this autumn, I hope we will be able to operationalize it through a business forum and also a technical agreement," she said.
Ibrahimaj said the agreement would enable Indonesians to work in Albania under a safe, regulated and ethical recruitment framework while protecting the interests of both migrant workers and employers.
She described the MoU as a reflection of the two countries' economic potential and their shared commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation.
The agreement follows Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto's visit to Albania in 2024, when he was serving as defence minister. During the trip, he met Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama and President Bajram Begaj to discuss closer bilateral ties.
Ibrahimaj also expressed hope that the memorandum would create new opportunities to deepen diplomatic and economic cooperation between Indonesia and Albania.
"I'm very happy that we have reached this signing, and I'm confident that Albania's demand for skilled workers will be met through the continued collaboration between our two countries," she said.
