KOTA KINABALU: About 1,000 people attended the 81st Indonesia Independence Day celebration at the KJRI Indonesia Consulate office here, in what Consul General Noorman Effendi described as one of the liveliest and most anticipated events by the Indonesian community in Sabah.
“Since taking up my post as Consul-General in Sabah, this is the first time I am celebrating Indonesia’s Independence Day here. I realised this is the biggest event I have ever witnessed compared to other celebrations in different countries before,” he said.
He said the turnout reflected the patriotism of Indonesians in Kota Kinabalu, who continue to uphold their roots no matter where they are.
Meanwhile, the Indonesian community here turned out in large numbers from estates, schools, and districts across the state. Children of estate workers performed in a band, presenting music and singing numbers.
He expressed hope that the close ties and camaraderie between Indonesians and Sabahans would continue to grow, while reminding his countrymen to uphold discipline, patriotism, and good relations with other communities.
He also highlighted that Indonesian Ambassador to Malaysia, Datuk Raden Mohammad Iman Hascarya Kusumo, had recently met with the Sabah Head of State to discuss bilateral cooperation and noted that Sabah has provided many work opportunities for Indonesians and expressed gratitude to the state government for maintaining initiatives that benefit the community.
He added that during discussions with the Sabah Head of State, the Ambassador indicated more industrial business delegations from Indonesia are expected to visit Sabah.
Talks are also underway to revive a direct flight between Tawau and Tarakan, which was previously halted. The service is expected to be reinstated by the end of this year, he said.
Meanwhile, Effendi said Indonesia’s new capital city in Kalimantan, Nusantara, is now 90 percent complete in terms of infrastructure, with schools and hospitals already built.
Monash University of Australia has confirmed plans to establish an international school there. He noted that many Sabah traders have already set up businesses in anticipation of the capital’s official opening in 2029.
