JAKARTA - Indonesia recorded 608,076 arrivals by ASEAN passport holders in May, up 11.06% year on year, the Tourism Ministry said as quoted by Indonesia’s state-owned agency Antara.
The total rose from 547,521 visits in May 2025. It represented about 44% of the 1,382,087 international arrivals recorded nationwide during the month, making ASEAN the largest regional source of inbound visitors.
Across all markets, international arrivals increased 5.83% from 1.31 million in May 2025. The May total was also higher than the 1.25 million arrivals recorded in April and was Indonesia’s strongest monthly result during the first five months of 2026.
“May 2026 was the highest arrival total recorded so far this year, showing that foreign travellers’ interest in Indonesia remains strong,” Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana said.
Arrivals reached 6.07 million from January through May, up 7.68% from the same period in 2025. ASEAN demand grew faster than every other regional market listed in the ministry’s update. Arrivals from the Middle East rose 5.67%, non-ASEAN Asia increased 5.37%, and Oceania grew 4.69%. Europe was the only region to contract, falling 5.91%.
The regional breakdown also shows the scale of nearby demand. ASEAN’s 608,076 arrivals were almost twice the 324,683 recorded from non-ASEAN Asian markets. Oceania supplied 182,929 arrivals, followed closely by Europe with 180,962.
Malaysia was Indonesia’s largest individual source market in May, accounting for 21.58% of international arrivals. Singapore ranked third with 9.89%, behind Australia at 11.22%.
The increase followed the ministry’s March 30 decision to place greater short-term emphasis on Asian markets during disruptions affecting long-haul travel through the Middle East.
Within ASEAN, it named Malaysia and Singapore as its first priorities, followed by the Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand. The ministry said it would maintain promotion in Europe and the United States but redirect some spending toward Asia.
Indonesia received 15.39 million international arrivals in 2025, an increase of 10.80% from the previous year. The government has set a target of between 16 million and 17.6 million visits for 2026.
