Indonesia has rolled out a new move that will definitely help ease the cost of living for lower income workers in Jakarta.

Anyone in the private sector who earns below 6.2 million rupiah (approx. RM1,550) a month will soon get to enjoy free public transport across the capital.

According to Kosmo, this initiative allows eligible workers to hop on TransJakarta buses, the Jakarta MRT, and the Jakarta LRT without paying a single cent.

The programme is part of Governor Regulation Number 33 of 2025, which focuses on expanding mass public transportation access to specific income groups.

Jakarta Transportation Department Chief Syafrin Liputo said the system will include periodic registration and verification to make sure the subsidy only goes to those who qualify.

He explained that workers will remain eligible as long as they are registered as holders of the Jakarta Worker Card.

However, the authorities will refresh and verify all data every six months to ensure only legitimate recipients continue receiving the benefit.

The move is expected to provide significant relief for thousands of workers in the city, where commuting costs can take up a large portion of monthly income.
