It’s not the gameplay or story — Rockstar Games’ next title, GTA 6, is making headlines because of its rumoured billion-dollar budget. This has raised a couple of questions: How can a mere video game cost so much? And what will be the impact of this massive production cost?

Rumours suggest that Rockstar Games has invested unprecedented resources into GTA 6, which might have made it not just the most expensive game ever created but also one of the costliest entertainment products across industries. Some have even started comparing it to global landmarks like the Burj Khalifa.

Curious to know more about it? Well, keep scrolling.

How much is the ‘GTA 6’ budget, and does it matter?

While Rockstar Games hardly discloses the budgets of games that are developed under its studios, a number of reports and leaks have estimated the GTA 6 budget to be somewhere around USD 1 or 2 billion. If proven true, it would mean that GTA 6 is the most expensive video game of all time, surpassing the likes of Cyberpunk 2077, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Destiny.

If GTA 6 is actually made on such a high budget, it would mean a number of things, most importantly that it will probably have a high price for its standard edition. This leads us to believe that, after all, there might be some truth to the USD 100 price tag for GTA 6 rumours.

What can this high ‘GTA 6’ budget be attributed to?

Certain things have been mentioned by some leakers over the last few months that might lead to such a high production cost. These are:

  1. Long development cycle: It’s a massive game, and titles with such ambitions tend to take a while to develop, which means a large budget.
  2. Massive marketing campaigns: People tend to forget that part of a game or movie budget goes into its marketing. For instance, 2K tends to go all out when it comes to spreading the good name of its biggest titles everywhere.

Whether Rockstar Games ever confirms it or not, the GTA 6 budget is already shaping up to be the most talked-about thing in recent times. There is no doubt it will be evident once it is released on 26 May 2026 (if there are no further delays, that is).
