Instagram is expanding its Teen Accounts in Malaysia, implementing new guidelines inspired by 13+ movie ratings to ensure that teens under 18 see content that is age-appropriate by default.
Through this implementation, Teens will be automatically placed into this updated 13+ setting, and parents must grant permission for them to opt out. Specifically, they will no longer be able to follow, interact with, or see content from accounts found to regularly share inappropriate material. Similarly, search functionality is updated to block mature search terms—such as ‘alcohol’ or ‘gore’—even if misspelled.
Furthermore, the system will prevent inappropriate content from appearing in recommendations (Explore, Reels, Feed, and Stories), block links to violating content in DMs, and ensure that AI responses align with the 13+ standard.
The new guidelines significantly expand content policies, building upon existing protections against suggestive imagery, graphic content, and adult items like tobacco or alcohol sales. The updated standards now also hide or prevent recommendations for strong language, certain risky stunts, and content that encourages potentially harmful behaviors, such as paraphernalia related to marijuana.
Recognizing that every family has different needs, Instagram is also introducing a new, stricter setting called Limited Content. This option empowers parents who prefer even greater control, as it will filter out additional content and remove teens’ ability to see, leave, or receive comments on posts.
The updated content settings are currently rolling out gradually to Teen Accounts in Malaysia and are expected to be fully implemented in the coming months.
