THE government is intensifying efforts to safeguard the economy and citizens’ welfare as the escalating conflict in West Asia drives global energy costs higher and threatens food security.
In a statement following a National Economic Action Council (MTEN) meeting today, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim acknowledged that the world is entering a more challenging and uncertain phase, with Malaysia exposed to the economic ripple effects of rising energy prices.
“We cannot be complacent or overly comfortable. We must prepare with discipline, resilience and a strong spirit of togetherness,” Anwar said.
Emphasising the country’s economic foundations, Anwar stressed that Malaysia’s economy remains resilient.
“The MADANI government will continue to act proactively based on current data and realities, including seeking input from industry and small and medium enterprises, so that every step taken is comprehensive, balanced and effective,” it added.
Citizens were urged to strengthen the domestic economy by prioritising local products and supporting Malaysian entrepreneurs, with the government highlighting that internal economic strength serves as the primary defence against external shocks.
“Insya-Allah, every decision will continue to be anchored in responsibility and the public interest. The government will ensure energy supply stability, economic functionality, and the welfare of the people remains a top priority in all actions,” he said in a Facebook post.
It was reported earlier, that Anwar was set to chair a high-level MTEN meeting on Wednesday, where strategies to mitigate the impact of geopolitical tensions on global energy supplies and the agricultural sector will be examined. - March 31, 2026
