The internal squabble within the Congress over the Sadbhav Yatra undertaken by party leader Brijendra Singh has escalated after Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi joined the yatra and later addressed a public meeting in Gurugram on May 8.
Hisar Congress MP Jai Prakash and Sirsa assembly segment MLA Gokul Setia have opened a fresh front against Brijendra Singh, launching a no-holds-barred attack over his previous association with the BJP.
Brijendra Singh, who had served as the BJP MP from Hisar during the previous Lok Sabha term, which coincided with the farmers’ agitation against the three farm laws introduced by the Modi-led Central government, has joined the Congress just before the Lok Sabha polls in 2024.
Leading the attack on Brijendra, Jai Prakash said the person who was siding with the BJP government at the Centre, which enacted three farm laws that claimed the lives of 730 farmers during the agitation, is still not acceptable to people.
Sirsa MLA Setia, in a Facebook post, wrote, “The people whose signatures led to the demise of 730 farmers are today beating the drum of Congress ideology while claiming to spread sadbhavana (goodwill).
Setia, while directly naming Rahul Gandhi in his post, questioned whether the Congress leader would attend a programme in Sirsa if he were to organise one there. Notably, former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and state Congress chief Rao Narender Singh were present at Rahul Gandhi’s event in Gurugram, while several other MPs and MLAs stayed away.
