The International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol) has denied receiving any requests for assistance from Malaysia in relation to comedian Jocelyn Chia.

Previously, Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) asserted that it has reached out to Interpol to help locate Chia, who was thrown into infamy recently due to her viral standup routine which poked fun at Malaysia and made an insensitive joke about the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370.

However, an Interpol spokesperson rebutted PDRM’s statement, saying that as of Wednesday (14 June), it has not received any request for notice or discussion from our country.

Speaking to CNA, the Interpol spokesperson asserted,

“No request for a notice or diffusion from Malaysia has been received in relation to this individual,”

The spokesperson added that any request for assistance must adhere to Interpol’s Constitution which forbids “any activities which are religious, racial, military or political in nature”.

Furthermore, Interpol stressed that any request associated with offences related to freedom of expression would also be assessed in line with international human rights standards.

Hence, any requests which do not comply with the rules or offence criteria would be refused by Interpol.

Chia herself commented regarding PDRM’s request to Interpol, saying that such action is ridiculous and would only further make her famous.

The reaction from Malaysian netizens was also divided on PDRM’s action, with some saying that asking Interpol to locate Chia is a waste of time and that the authorities should focus on other things.
