Leaders from both sectors unite to enhance practical learning and industry readiness among students.

In a significant move to bridge the gap between academia and the retail industry, INTI International University and Colleges (INTI) and the Malaysia Retail Chain Association (MRCA) have entered into a strategic partnership aimed at equipping students with the practical skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in a rapidly evolving business landscape.

During the memorandum of understanding signing at INTI International University in Nilai, Datuk Dr. Ken Phua, President of MRCA and Managing Director of Bentley Music Sdn Bhd, emphasised the importance of integrating industry experience with academic learning.

"This collaboration is about preparing students not just academically but practically, readying them for the dynamic and challenging environments they will face," said Phua in his speech.

"I believe that the day we stop learning is the day we start dying. Regardless of age, continuous learning is vital. It’s about legacy—passing on knowledge to the next generation, ensuring that youths are well-prepared to lead and innovate," he added.

Phua, whose own educational path includes a Management Science degree from the University of Bradford, an MBA from the University of the Sunshine Coast, and a certification as a financial planner from the Financial Planning Association of Malaysia (FPAM), recently embarked on a PhD in management at INTI International University.

Dr. Chong Kok Wai, Chief Executive Officer of INTI International University, highlighted in his speech the changing needs of the retail industry, driven by shifting consumer expectations and technological advancements. "Through this partnership, we will develop HRDF-approved training programs and qualifications that are designed for real-world application," he explained.

"We are welcoming six outstanding business leaders as adjunct professors who have significantly shaped the Malaysian retail industry," added Chong.

The adjunct professors, alongside Phua, include Dato’ Eddie Choon Yee Seiong, founder of MRCA and Managing Director of Poh Kong Holdings Bhd; Dato’ Liaw Choon Liang, MRCA President Council and CEO/President of Focus Point Holdings Bhd; Datuk Seri Nelsen Kwok, MRCA President Council, Founder and Chairman of the Nelson Group of Companies, and Honorary Consul of the Republic of Mozambique; Dato’ Tay Sim Kim, MRCA President Council and Executive Chairman of Goldenhome Interior Sdn Bhd; and Datuk Seri Garry Chua, MRCA President Council and Founder of the Rotol Group of Companies.

The partnership will also enable MRCA members to engage directly with INTI students through mentorships, industrial talks, and potential research collaborations, enriching the student's learning experience with practical insights and professional expertise.

Both leaders are confident that this collaboration will not only enhance educational outcomes but also contribute significantly to the growth and competitiveness of the retail sector in Malaysia.
