The Malaysian government is set to introduce a new variety of rice called Malaysia Madani white rice, priced at RM30 for a 10kg sack, starting from February 19, with availability in the market expected by March 1.

According to Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Faisal, Chairman of the task force (food cluster) under the National Action Council for Cost of Living (Naccol), this initiative aims to simplify the categorization of rice by eliminating distinctions between local white rice (SST) and imported white rice (SSI). The Malaysia Madani white rice will be the sole category moving forward.

During the transition period between February 19 and March 1, rice industry players are allowed to sell rice in old packaging until their stocks are depleted. Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz emphasized that this adjustment aims to provide consumers with more affordable pricing and ensure market availability.

He further elaborated on the pricing structure, stating that a 5kg sack of Malaysia Madani white rice will be priced at RM15.50, while a 1kg bag will cost RM3.50.

Industry players are required to comply with the new regulations by March 1, including changing the labeling and packaging of rice sacks. While the government permits the use of old packaging during this transition, it must be labeled with the Malaysia Madani white rice price sticker.

Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz highlighted that rice prices have remained stagnant for 18 years, and the introduction of the Malaysia Madani white rice aims to benefit both consumers and rice growers.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has approved the introduction of Malaysia Madani white rice, signaling government support for this initiative.

The establishment of a ceiling price for Malaysia Madani white rice serves as a safeguard against manipulation in the local white rice market, where some manufacturers mix local and imported varieties to sell them at higher prices. This manipulation has been exacerbated by the lack of price controls on imported rice and the global increase in rice prices.

In conclusion, the introduction of Malaysia Madani white rice represents a significant step towards ensuring fair pricing and availability in the rice market, while also safeguarding consumer interests and supporting local rice growers.
