PAS Chief Warns Against DAP’s PM Term Limit Proposal, Calls It Against Islamic Principles
A recent proposal by DAP Secretary-General Anthony Loke Siew Fook to limit the Prime Minister’s tenure to 10 years has sparked strong reactions, particularly from PAS President Abdul Hadi Awang. Loke emphasized that the proposed amendment was not aimed at forcing Anwar Ibrahim to step down but rather to establish a lasting reform that would strengthen democratic governance.
However, Abdul Hadi Awang took to Facebook to criticize the proposal, arguing that it contradicts Islamic principles. He claimed that those supporting the idea have either disregarded or are unaware of the bigger picture. According to him, Islam is meant to lead the nation, as guided by Allah, for both success in this world and the afterlife.
The PAS leader accused DAP of sidelining Islam and attempting to diminish its influence in governance. He also criticized former PAS members who have aligned themselves with DAP, asserting that their silence on Islamic matters is equivalent to betraying their faith and inviting Allah's wrath.
Furthermore, Hadi reinforced his belief that Malaysia is inherently a Malay-Muslim nation and should be led by qualified Muslim leaders. While PAS is open to cooperating with non-Muslims, he stressed that only those who respect Islamic leadership should be considered as political allies. He framed the issue as part of a broader struggle to maintain Malaysia’s Islamic and Malay identity, warning that DAP’s efforts could weaken both.
He stressed, "Malaysia belongs to Malay Muslims, and it must be defended. PAS is open to working with non-Muslims, but only those who aren’t extreme and respect Islamic leadership in the country. This land originally belonged to Muslims before colonial forces took over."
PAS President Abdul Hadi Awang concluded his statement by asserting that Malaysia’s historical roots as a Muslim land must be upheld and that any attempt to shift the balance of power away from Islam should be resisted.
