iPay88 users’ card info ‘may’ be leaked in security breach

KUALA LUMPUR – The credit card data of millions of users may have been compromised following a cybersecurity breach reported by online payment provider iPay88.

The company did not state when the breach occurred but said it initiated an investigation on May 31 “to mitigate the issue” with the help of cybersecurity experts.

“The containment process was successfully completed and no further suspicious activity has been detected since July 20.

“To ensure the continued safety of the card data, we have implemented various new measures and controls to strengthen the system’s security against any further incidents,” it said in a statement on its website.

Investigations are ongoing and the company is also working closely with the authorities, it added.

“More updates and detailed findings will be shared in due course. All financial institution partners have been informed and kept up to date.

“We will continue to monitor the situation closely and ensure the safety of the cardholder data.”

iPay88’s statement, however, drew flak from Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil who asked why the public was only being informed of the cybersecurity breach two months later.

“Companies like iPay88 feel no sense of urgency to alert/caution customers, users at all,” he tweeted, adding that the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 must be amended urgently to better protect consumers. – The Vibes, August 11, 2022
