An IPTS student has been charged with murdering a 78-year-old man in Kuala Langat after a video of an alleged drink-driving incident went viral

SHAH ALAM: A student of a private higher education institution (IPTS) who went viral after allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol was charged in the Telok Datok Magistrate’s Court in Kuala Langat today with murdering an elderly man last week.

N. Vishwesh, 23, nodded in understanding when the charge was read out before Magistrate Maslinda Selamat, but no plea was recorded as murder cases fall under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

According to the charge, the man is accused of murdering Eng Kim Kheng @ Ng Kim Swee, 78, at Kilometre 38, Jalan Klang-Banting-Port Dickson, in the Kuala Langat district at about 7.20 pm on Aug 7.

The charge was framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which provides for the death penalty or imprisonment of between 30 and 40 years and, if the death penalty is not imposed, whipping of not less than 12 strokes upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Amirul Syafiq Yazid appeared for the prosecution, while the accused was represented by T. Mishant.

The court did not grant bail to the accused and fixed Oct 1 for mention.

Previously, a video recording of an accident at the Kanchong Bengkok traffic light intersection in Banting went viral, showing a man admitting to driving under the influence of alcohol while another man was seen lying on the road with a leg injury.
