The Israeli military has warned Iran will face consequences for its attack over the weekend as the United Nations urged Israel to show restraint in its response.

Chief of the general staff, Herzi Halevi, said Tehran’s attack had created new opportunities for cooperation in the Middle East and it would “face consequences for its actions”.

Ali Bagheri Kani, Iran’s deputy foreign minister, said Tehran would respond to any fresh Israeli mistake within seconds.

“They should know that they will not have a 12-day-long timespace,” he said in a televised interview on Monday. “The response that they are going to receive cannot be measured by days or hours, but [will come in a matter of] seconds.”

It comes after UN secretary-general, Antonio Guterres, said the region couldn’t afford another war and it was time to “defuse” and “de-escalate”.

Joe Biden told Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the US wouldn’t support any Israeli counterattack against Iran.

UK foreign secretary David Cameron also called on Israel to act “with head as well as heart” to the unprecedented Iranian attack on Saturday, which saw Tehran fire more than 300 missiles and drones at Israel.
