Iran are not walking away from the World Cup, they are attempting to outmanoeuvre Donald Trump.

The political storm surrounding their participation has intensified, yet a fresh move suggests Tehran is still determined to compete this summer.

Tensions between Iran, the United States and Israel have reshaped the sporting landscape after military strikes killed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and triggered retaliation across the region, raising serious safety concerns around the tournament.

With matches originally scheduled in Los Angeles and Seattle, Iran now appear to be exploring an alternative that keeps them in the competition while avoiding the United States entirely.

Iran’s position has hardened following Donald Trump’s statement that raised concerns about their safety.

“The Iran National Soccer Team is welcome to The World Cup, but I really don’t believe it is appropriate that they be there, for their own life and safety. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP,” he said.

Now, a post from the Iranian embassy in Mexico has revealed a decisive shift.

Mehdi Taj, President of the Iranian Football Federation, revealed: “When Trump clearly stated that he cannot guarantee the safety of the Iranian national team, we will definitely not travel to the United States. We are negotiating with FIFA so that Iran’s World Cup matches can be held in Mexico.”

Canada and Mexico will co-host the tournament alongside the US, but have two and three host cities respectively, compared to 11 in the US.

A dramatic shift after withdrawal threats

This marks a clear change in tone.

Only days ago, Iran’s sports minister insisted the country could not participate in the World Cup, citing US responsibility for Khamenei’s death and escalating conflict in the region following joint strikes with Israel.

Now, instead of withdrawing, Iran are attempting to stay in the tournament by bypassing the United States altogether.

It is a new twist that places FIFA in a difficult position, with geopolitics now directly challenging the structure of the 2026 World Cup.
