Iran grants safe passage to some Indian vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, a rare exception to its blockade that has disrupted global energy supplies.

NEW DELHI: Iran has allowed some Indian vessels to sail through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

Tehran’s Ambassador to India, Mohammad Fathali, confirmed the rare exception to the blockade on Saturday, speaking at broadcaster India Today’s conclave in New Delhi.

He did not confirm the number of vessels that have been provided safe passage.

Since the United States and Israel launched a bombing campaign on Iran, Tehran has largely halted traffic through the strait.

The waterway runs past Iran’s coast and is a conduit for around 20% of global oil and seaborne liquefied natural gas supplies.
