
Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Kasem Gharibabadi flew to Oman on Monday where he met with a senior Omani diplomat for a first meeting of a newly established Hormuz Joint Committee, Gharibabadi wrote on X.
The Iranian diplomat met with Abdulaziz Al Hinai for discussions on current issues relating to the strait, including future management of the key waterway and the sovereign rights of both coastal states, the X post stated. No further details were initially disclosed.
According to Omani sources, both sides discussed closer coordination on shipping and maritime services. At the same time, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Muscat, they reaffirmed their commitment to international law, as well as to the common interests and sovereignty of both coastal states.
Over the weekend, the conflict between the United States and Iran had flared up again with mutual attacks.
Just under two weeks ago, the warring parties had signed a framework agreement intended to pave the way for a permanent end to the war. The opening of the strait to shipping is a key component of the recently inked agreement.
