IRAN will not reopen the Strait of Hormuz until its conditions are met and commitments made by the United States are implemented, parliament speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said, keeping pressure on a vital global oil-shipping route as Tehran pursues talks with Washington.
Iran’s Fars news agency reported that Qalibaf said Tehran would pursue its fight and negotiations simultaneously in its conflict with the United States.
“We believe that separating war and negotiations is not realistic. Instead, we need to fight and negotiate at the same time.
“However, when we achieve a major victory on the battlefield and the enemy becomes weakened, we need to use diplomacy to consolidate those achievements until we can reach a level of deterrence by defeating the enemy and strengthening our own capabilities,” Reuters quoted him saying.
Iran’s Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Mohsen Rezaei, had earlier said Tehran had conveyed conditions to intermediaries for the resumption of negotiations with the United States.
The conditions include an end to the war on all fronts, the release of frozen Iranian funds and an end to the naval blockade, Rezaei said.
He said negotiations through intermediaries from Qatar and Pakistan were continuing, while Tehran was awaiting a response from US President Donald Trump.
The Strait of Hormuz links the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea and is one of the world’s key routes for oil shipments, making its continued closure a potential source of disruption to global energy supplies. - September 20, 2026
