Iran has threatened counterstrikes after US attacks on targets in Iran in response to the downing of a US military helicopter.

"Our Powerful Armed Forces will leave no attack or threat unanswered," Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi wrote on X early on Wednesday.

"Leave our region if you want to be safe. History of the Persian Gulf has many chapters on dire fates of intruding outsiders," he added.

The US news portal Axios cited a US official as saying that US forces had bombed Iranian air defence and radar systems around the Strait of Hormuz.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said on X that the strikes were "a proportional response to unjustified Iranian aggression."

Earlier, US President Donald Trump said Iran had shot down a US military helicopter off the coast of Oman. Both crew members were safe, according to Trump.

According to Iranian media, the United States has since halted its attacks.
