Iran’s ambassador to Kuwait urges Gulf nations to prevent a regional tragedy as a US deadline for a deal on the Strait of Hormuz approaches

KUWAIT CITY: Iran’s ambassador to Kuwait has urged Gulf states to work to avert a “tragedy” as a deadline set by US President Donald Trump approaches.

Trump has warned that unless Tehran allows free passage through the strategic Strait of Hormuz by midnight GMT, the US will unleash the “complete demolition” of Iran’s critical infrastructure.

“We hope that the countries in the region will use all their diplomatic and political capabilities to prevent such a tragedy from befalling the region,” ambassador Mohammad Toutounji told AFP.

He warned that US strikes on vital facilities would lead to a “complete and total cessation of energy exports from the region”.

Toutounji said Tehran “does not want to escalate tensions in the region” and strives to de-escalate.

Iran has responded to US and Israeli strikes by launching attacks across the Gulf during more than a month of war.

These have targeted US assets as well as airports, major oil and gas infrastructure, ports, and residential areas.

Earlier, Iran’s ambassador to Pakistan said efforts to end the war were approaching a “critical” stage.

Reza Amiri Moghadam wrote on X about “positive and productive endeavours” to stop the conflict, without giving details.
