Iran calls on the UN to condemn the US seizure of an Iranian cargo ship, calling it piracy and a breach of a 2026 ceasefire agreement.

UNITED NATIONS: Iran has called on the United Nations to condemn the United States seizure of an Iranian cargo ship.

Tehran characterised the move as an act of piracy and a breach of a ceasefire.

In a letter to the Security Council and Secretary-General, Iran’s Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani said the action severely endangers shipping lane security. He stated it constitutes a material breach of the 8 April 2026 ceasefire and qualifies as an act of aggression under the UN charter.

Iravani urged the UN to condemn the seizure and demand the ship’s immediate release. The incident involves the Iran-flagged vessel Touska, seized by the US Navy in the Sea of Oman.

US President Donald Trump announced the seizure on Sunday, stating the vessel was subject to US sanctions. He said the Navy fired on the ship after it failed to respond to warnings to stop.

“The Iranian crew refused to listen, so our Navy ship stopped them right in their tracks by blowing a hole in the engineroom,” Trump added. On Tuesday, Trump wrote he was extending the ceasefire with Iran to allow more negotiation time.

He confirmed the US would maintain a naval blockade of Iran’s ports during this period.
