Iran-US war latest: Tehran warns Hormuz won’t reopen until conditions met as Houthis claim major Saudi oil refinery attack

Iran has warned that the Strait of Hormuz will remain shut until the conditions it laid out in an interim agreement in June are met, according to Nournews.

Traffic has effectively come to a standstill with attacks in the vicinity of the waterway reported over the weekend.

“The Americans, who say something different in the media, have recently put forward proposals through a mediator. But they must understand that the period of dragging out the process and dictating one-sided demands is over,” Iran’s parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said on Sunday.

“The position of the Islamic Republic of Iran is completely clear and firm, and the Strait of Hormuz will not be opened until our seven conditions, based on the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, are met.” The conditions include a lifting of economic sanctions and a complete stop to all hostilities.

Foreign minister Abbas Araghchi said separately on Sunday ‌that a plan put forward by Tehran could lead to the route reopening within seven days if accepted.

Meanwhile, Yemen's Houthis have claimed responsibility for carrying out a ballistic missile attack on the Aramco oil refinery in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The Houthis said the attack was carried out in retaliation for Saudi attacks on Yemen's Sanaa and other provinces.

Houthis claim missile and drone attack on Aramco facility in Riyadh

Sunday 4 October 2026 00:00 , Suha Kidwai

Yemen's Houthi rebels have claimed responsibility for a coordinated missile and drone strike targeting a Saudi Aramco facility in the capital city of Riyadh.

Witnesses reported seeing a large plume of smoke and fire rising near an Aramco installation in Riyadh earlier in the day.

The Houthi military has stated the assault was launched in direct retaliation for recent Saudi coalition airstrikes against Sanaa and other Yemeni provinces.

The reported strike marks a sharp escalation in cross-border targeting following claims last week of Houthi strikes against Aramco assets in Yanbu.

Yemeni forces claim 97 'precision' attacks against Houthis

04:00 , Vishwam Sankaran

Yemeni government-aligned forces claim they conducted 97 “precision targeting operations” against the Houthis using aircraft, drones, artillery, missiles and snipers.

The attacks led to “neutralising (260) elements of the militia”, Yemeni military spokesperson Brigadier General Majid Abdullah Al-Nuzaili said in a post on X.

Earlier in the day, the Houthi military said it launched coordinated attacks targeting a Saudi Aramco facility in Riyadh in retaliation for recent Saudi coalition airstrikes against Sanaa and other Yemeni provinces.

Yemeni government launches major counteroffensive to eradicate Houthi movement

23:00 , Suha Kidwai

Yemen’s internationally recognised government has announced a comprehensive military campaign aimed at fully recapturing all territory held by the Iran-backed Houthi militia.

In a televised address from Riyadh, Presidential Leadership Council chairman Rashad al-Alimi declared that armed forces will push forward until the country is "liberated from the grip of the terrorist militia."

Military spokespeople have subsequently issued a demand for Houthi fighters to lay down their arms and surrender.

Supported by Saudi air power and Western intelligence, the assault follows a month of major Houthi gains, including their capture of the strategic Bab el-Mandeb strait along the Red Sea. Yemeni leadership stated the decision to launch the offensive was taken after all diplomatic attempts to de-escalate hostilities were exhausted.

Recap: FBI arrests Energy Department employee on charge of trying to support Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen

A Department of Energy electrical engineer has been arrested on charges of providing support to the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels, including by buying materials for homemade explosives and drones and traveling to Yemen, the Justice Department said Thursday.

Ashton Hamed Ellaboudy, 51, of Richland, Washington, was arrested Thursday and is due to make his first court appearance Friday. Court records do not list an attorney available to speak on his behalf.

The FBI says Ellaboudy had a goal of helping the Houthis improve their communications capabilities and traveled last September to Yemen, where the Houthis and Saudi-backed government forces are now engaged in renewed violence that has killed hundreds and displaced tens of thousands. The conflict began in 2014 when the Iran-backed rebels took over the capital, Sanaa, forcing the country’s government to settle into exile in Saudi Arabia.

How Iran’s ‘bazaar style’ negotiation tactic is stalling deal discussions to its benefit

20:30 , Maira Butt

Negotiations between the US and Iran over an end to the war on the country have been languishing in a stalemate for weeks as both sides remain intransigent about key issues including nuclear development and the situation in Lebanon.

The US is insistent that Tehran surrender its right to ever develop highly enriched uranium and appears to have been manoeuvring to install a government more sympathetic to Western interests.

Meanwhile, Iran has said that it will never agree to a deal that does not ensure the sovereignty of Lebanon and its borders from Israel - with Israeli strikes against Hezbollah in Lebanon continuing - and has insisted on its ability to hold on to some nuclear development capabilities.

Australian Treasurer Jim Chalmers has said that the ongoing US-Iran war in the Middle East has been an economic disaster, blaming it for high inflation and slowing global growth.

“Whatever the reasons were for going in, from an economic point of view, the war in the Middle East has been a disaster,” Chalmers said.

“The war in the Middle East is putting very substantial upward pressure on inflation. That’s why we’re seeing interest rates go up around the world,” he told ABC News.

Iran denies delegation was 'kicked out' of US after ignoring orders to leave

16:30 , Maira Butt

Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi has denied claims that the country’s delegation at the UN General Assembly last week was “kicked out” of the country.

Axios reported, citing a US official, that two members of the delegation had been deported.

“Secretary Rubio means business. Two more members of the Iranian delegation were found still in New York long after the UN General Assembly had passed. They have now been kicked out of the country,” the official said.

Araghchi commented on the reports on Sunday, saying: “All Iranian diplomats who attended UNGA, except one who departed earlier, left as scheduled.

“Taking pride in fake diplomat ‘expulsion’ is inappropriate for the head of any diplomatic corps.

“It oozes of desperation and defeat, and is inconsistent with UN host nation obligations.”

Yemen's Houthis say they struck Saudi Aramco sites in Riyadh, Khurais

15:00 , Maira Butt

Yemen's Houthi rebels have said they launched ballistic missiles and drones at Saudi Aramco sites in Riyadh and the Khurais area, claiming the attacks caused major fires, in response to what they said were 50 Saudi-led coalition air and missile strikes in Yemen over the past 12 hours.

There was no immediate confirmation from Saudi Arabia on the statement.

Who are the Houthis?

14:30 , Maira Butt

The Yemeni rebel group was formed in the 1990s as a political-religious Shia movement orchestrating a series of guerrilla wars against Yemen’s national army.

They currently control significant parts of northwestern Yemen, including its capital Sana’a, after seizing it following the country’s 2014 civil war when they forced the government to step down.

A Saudi-led, western-backed coalition took over, which the Houthis have spent years fighting with the assistance of Iran, before a UN-brokered deal in 2022. A Saudi and UAE bombing campaign against Houthi targets was launched in 2015 and drew criticism over civilian deaths, leading to calls for the UK to cease arms exports to Saudi Arabia.

The war is estimated to have killed around 400,000 people, many who died through famine after Saudi Arabia’s restriction of ports through which Yemen imported 90 per cent of its food, which humanitarian groups considered a major driving factor of the crisis.

Often mistakenly considered a proxy group, the Houthis have their own political aims and agendas outside of those affiliated with Iran, which provides it with weapons, training and technical support.

The Houthis, along with Gaza’s Hamas and Lebanon’s Hezbollah, form part of Iran’s “axis of resistance” - a military alliance built over four decades to oppose Israeli and American power in the Middle East.

Portuguese investigate US military access to base during Iran conflict

03:00 , Suha Kidwai

Portuguese prosecutors have opened a formal inquiry into the government's decision to allow US military flights to use Lajes Air Base in the Azores during the ongoing conflict with Iran.

The prosecutor general's office confirmed the probe following a legal complaint filed by the opposition Left Bloc party, which claims allowing US transit operations violates international law.

Under a 1951 bilateral treaty, Washington can utilise the strategic Atlantic hub freely during peacetime, but must secure explicit Portuguese approval once active hostilities begin.

Foreign minister Paulo Rangel defended the authorisation, stating Lisbon received firm assurances from Washington that US operations would remain defensive, necessary, and proportionate.

Unlike neighboring Spain, which restricted US access, Portugal's approval has ignited fierce political debate over the nation's indirect involvement in the conflict.

Iranian rial plunges to record low despite $2B central bank intervention

02:00 , Suha Kidwai

Iran’s rial has plummeted to a historic low, with the US dollar now trading above 2.68 million rials in spite of emergency central bank intervention.

State banks began selling up to $2 billion in foreign reserves to stabilise the currency, which has lost more than half its value over the past year.

However, severe sanctions and a naval blockade on Iranian oil exports continue to choke off the regime's primary source of foreign revenue, pushing domestic inflation past 70 percent.

Central bank officials dismissed the market crash as a temporary panic, accusing Washington of spreading false economic predictions to induce capital flight.

Two Iranian nationals charged over Manchester synagogue chlorine bomb plot

01:00 , Suha Kidwai

Two Iranian men appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Saturday accused of planning a chemical bomb attack on Jewish targets in Manchester, including a synagogue targeted in a fatal attack last year.

Salam Ahmadyan, 36, and Rahman Salehi, 34, conducted "hostile reconnaissance" at Heaton Park Synagogue and the Manchester Jewish Museum, according to prosecutors.

The court heard the men were allegedly directed by a handler in Iran who provided instructions on building an improvised explosive device using household chemicals and brake fluid.

The alleged plot directly targeted the Heaton Park Synagogue on the anniversary of the October 2025 Yom Kippur attack, in which a gunman killed two worshipers before being shot dead by police.

Both suspects were remanded in custody ahead of an October 23 hearing at the Old Bailey.

Iraq ships 2M barrels of crude through Strait of Hormuz

The move gives state oil marketer SOMO greater flexibility to secure better sales and pricing terms in international markets.

Abdul Jabbar added that the company is actively working to purchase specialised crude tankers to expand its state fleet and compete with regional maritime shipping firms.

Beyond the Strait of Hormuz: How Gulf countries are preparing for life without the waterway

Saturday 3 October 2026 21:00 , Maira Butt

Port operator DP World is in talks to develop new facilities in the coastal area of Fujairah to take pressure off its flagship Jebel Ali port, according to the Financial Times.

Jebel Ali, built in 1977, has made the UAE a hub of finance and trade, but weeks ago it was set alight by a piece of fallen debris from an Iranian missile. Since then, Dubai International Airport, US military bases and other facilities have come under direct attack.

Colossal losses are no surprise considering that a huge 20 per cent of global oil supply all passes through the strategic waterway, which has remained deadlocked now for months.

With an interim agreement that was thinly constructed now falling apart by the day, it appears that Gulf countries are hatching plans to protect their own economies.

US bombers have taken part in raids against targets in Iran from the location.

Police confirmed he had now been released, and searches at two properties in London had concluded.

"The investigation into the circumstances surrounding events in Gloucestershire is continuing," police said in a statement.

The UK is facing “a range of serious threats” from Iran, Shabana Mahmood has said after two migrants were charged with an alleged bomb plot against the Jewish community.

The Tehran regime “target our Jewish communities and try to silence their critics overseas, often through proxies and criminal networks to hide their involvement”, the Home Secretary said.

Iranians Salam Ahmadyan, 36, of Liverpool, and Rahman Salehi, 34, of Salford, who were arrested in Manchester on Sunday, September 20, have been charged on Friday with engaging in conduct in preparation for terrorist acts, contrary to Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006, Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) said.
