Donald Trump has insisted the US will win its war in Iran “very soon” as mediators held a fresh round of peace talks in New York.
Speaking to reporters from the Oval Office, the US president promised the price of gas would come tumbling down after the war, adding he believed it would be over “quickly”.
"We're going to win, as far as I'm concerned, it's going to be one way or the other," Mr Trump said. "It's going to go pretty quickly."
It comes after Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran was prepared for a “doomsday” war with the US, but at the same time keeping diplomacy open.
“We are ready to negotiate as much as we are ready to face any challenge ... We stand firm in the face of any aggression against us, even if it comes to a doomsday war,” he said.
Donald Trump has publicly rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end fighting, claiming the US was “winning tremendously”.
However, Iranian officials have responded by insisting diplomacy is the only solution, amid reports Trump is planning on resuming hostilities after domestic elections in November.

I guess that was one of the problems that we had, which started the whole mess of crime, and we're ending cashless bail. But over there, I'm surprised that they released them. I wouldn't have deadlines. Look, they've been very good. They worked with us very closely."
Pressed on whether Iran was involved he said: “I'd rather not. I mean, I know the answer. I can be very specific, but I'd rather not say it. But I would not have released them.”

RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk confirmed it is on Charlie alert, which is the second-highest threat level that can be issued by the US Department of Defence.
The confirmation to PA came amid reports that RAF Fairford has been raised to the highest threat level, Delta.
A spokesperson for the USAF said its personnel based at RAF Fairford “remain vigilant”, but “for operational security reasons we will not discuss specific force protection measures”.
They said its 501st Combat Support Wing and UK counterparts “will take appropriate actions to ensure the safety and security of our US service members, civilians, contractors, and their families”.
The 501st is “the only combat support wing in the USAF” and operates from 10 bases including Fairford, according to its website.

The talks are expected to focus on an amended version of a seven-day proposal that Iran presented last week on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, said the official, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity.
Mr Araqchi remains in New York after attending the General Assembly. It was not immediately clear who would represent the US side in the talks with mediators.
Iran's semi-official ISNA news agency later confirmed that Mr Araqchi would meet the mediators in the US on Monday morning, New York time.
The two sides will "examine the latest proposals and views regarding the current situation", ISNA added.

With no shops or pub, the community has just a 19th century church, hosting one service a month, and a mixture of homes mostly located on a main road linking the more well-known village of Kempsford and town of Fairford.
But in recent months, tensions had been mounting.
For situated on the village’s doorstep is the RAF Fairford base, where the government has granted the US permission to use for defensive strikes against Iranian missile sites. The move has resulted in increased police presence, as well as hundreds of protestors taking to its streets.
And early on Sunday morning, a usual peaceful morning turned into a desperate scramble for dozens of families who were woken to officers banging at their doors, demanding they evacuate their homes immediately.

Iran’s main airport remains fully operational despite US sanctions, CEO says

06:15 , Maroosha MuzaffarCrude oil exports from key Middle East producers rebounded in September to 12.8 million barrels per day, the highest since the US-Israeli war with Iran started in February, data from Kpler showed on Monday, as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates boosted exports.
The rebound came following a recovery in exports via the Strait of Hormuz, which were set to hit about 7.4 million bpd this month, as Saudi Arabia diverted oil exports from the Red Sea port of Yanbu following attacks that damaged its East-West pipeline, the preliminary data showed.
While exports from the region - which includes Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Iraq, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Iran - have rebounded, they were still about 6 million bpd down from 18.8 million bpd in February, according to Kpler.
The region's top exporter Saudi Arabia was on track to ship about 5.4 million bpd this month, rebounding from 2.446 million bpd in August, the data showed. September shipments from the Ras Tanura port in the Gulf jumped to about 3.6 million bpd, from 929,000 bpd in August, but still lower than the 6.411 million bpd recorded in February, according to the data.
A total of 19 very large crude carriers, carrying 2 million barrels of Saudi oil each, exited the Strait of Hormuz last week, Kpler data showed.
The figures exclude any vessels that might have crossed the strait with their Automatic Identification System transponders turned off to avoid detection.
Before the Iran war started on 28 February, the strait typically handled about 125 large commercial vessels per day, including tankers, gas carriers, bulkers and container vessels, accounting for some 20 per cent of the world's daily crude oil and liquefied natural gas supply.

Craig and Lindsay Foreman were arrested by Iranian authorities in January last year as they travelled through the country on a motorcycle trip.
They are currently being held in Tehran’s Evin prison and their family has repeatedly appealed for their safe return.
Miliband called for them to be immediately released, “stressing that their welfare remains a priority for the Government”.

Mr Miliband met his Iranian counterpart in the margins of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Thursday.
The Foreign Office said the pair discussed the war in the Middle East, the importance of reopening the Strait of Hormuz and the UK’s “unwavering resolve to combat threats from Iranian-linked groups in UK soil”.
In a readout from the meeting, the department said: “The Foreign Secretary told Araghchi that Iran should choose de-escalation and diplomacy instead of prolonging the war.
“He underlined the importance of restoring freedom of navigation and the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, stressing the impact continued disruption has on global security and economic stability.
“The Foreign Secretary reiterated the UK’s unwavering resolve to combat threats from Iranian-linked groups in UK soil, including attacks on the British Jewish community.
“The Foreign Secretary made clear that Britain will not tolerate intimidation, threats or hostile activity on UK soil and set out the measures the Government has taken in response.”
Five now arrested over 'terror plot' near RAF airbase used by the US

A Met statement said: “Counter Terrorism Policing can now confirm they are leading an investigation into an incident which took place overnight near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire.
“At around 12.45am today (Sunday 27 September), police received a call relating to three suspicious vehicles which appeared to be travelling towards the air base.
“Armed officers responded and five men were arrested in the Whelford area on suspicion of committing offences under the Explosives Act. They were further arrested on suspicion of preparation of a terrorist act, contrary to section 5 of the Terrorism Act.”

Multiple arrests during major incident near UK airbase used by US

The British government gave authorisation to the US to use RAF Fairford to carry out strikes on Iranian missile sites that are attacking ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran's Revolutionary Guards warned in July that any base used in strikes would be a legitimate target.
A Reuters eyewitness said armed police had blocked access to the main gate of the base, while equipment had been positioned in front of access points and residents of a nearby village were evacuated to a leisure centre.
Around 30 emergency vehicles, including police cars, ambulances and fire engines, were stationed in the village of Fairford near the base.
Army bomb disposal experts have been examining a number of vehicles in the area and residents nearby were evacuated from their homes Sunday morning.
Iran claims it has seized US underwater vehicle

The Guards said the vehicle had been captured using intelligence and electronic warfare capabilities and was being examined by Iranian specialists to recover its data.
The US has yet to respond to the claims.
