Iran’s envoy to the IAEA says any US or Israeli strike on the Bushehr nuclear power plant would violate international law and constitute a war crime.

VIENNA: A US or Israeli strike on Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant would be a war crime under international law. Tehran’s envoy to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Reza Najafi (pic), issued the warning in an interview.

He also denied that Iran had resumed uranium enrichment following US-Israeli strikes on its nuclear facilities last June. “We didn’t restart enrichment, and it was a lie, a very big lie, like the other lies,” Najafi told AFP.

The envoy argued that targeting civilian nuclear infrastructure breaks international humanitarian law. Any attack on the Bushehr plant would be a clear violation, he stated.

“Even during the war, it is prohibited to attack the facilities for use of the civilians,” Najafi said. He described such an attack as a crime against humanity and a war crime.

Israel and the US have long accused Iran of seeking to build a nuclear weapon. US President Donald Trump cited this threat to justify last year’s conflict and the ongoing war.

The current war was sparked by US-Israeli strikes on February 28. Najafi insisted the justification alleging Iran sought weapons-grade enrichment was false.
