Iranian media have reported fresh explosions along the country’s southern coast following overnight exchanges of fire between the United States and Iran.

The Mehr News Agency and other outlets said on Friday that blasts were heard near the town of Sirik in the Hormozgan Province, which lies along the Strait of Hormuz. The cause was not immediately clear, according to the reports.

Military tensions had flared up between the warring parties on Thursday night. The US had attacked targets on the Iranian mainland, and Iran attacked US military ships with missiles and speedboats.

Both sides disagree on the sequence of the respective attacks. As early as Wednesday, the US fired on an Iranian tanker and said it had disabled the vessel's rudder.

A ceasefire has been in place in the Iran conflict for just over a month. However, military tensions remain high.
