Iran's military has said clashes with US warships in the Strait of Hormuz have ended and that the situation is now calm.
“After a period of mutual fire, the fighting has ceased and the situation is under control,” the Tasnim news agency, which has close ties to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards, quoted a military source as saying on Friday.
According to the report, the latest escalation was triggered by US forces firing on an Iranian-flagged oil tanker on Wednesday. The Iranian navy is said to have responded to this “violation of the ceasefire.”
The confrontation intensified overnight Thursday, with Iran attacking US naval vessels while the United States struck targets on the Iranian mainland.
Both sides disagree on the sequence of the respective attacks.
Tasnim also reported that Iranian naval forces carried out a combined missile and drone attack on US warships overnight, using eight cruise missiles and 24 so-called kamikaze drones. According to the report, one missile and three drones struck US destroyers, causing fires.
There was no immediate confirmation of the claims from the United States.
Meanwhile, on Friday, US Central Command (CENTCOM) wrote on X that two vessels had attempted to enter an Iranian port in the Gulf of Oman.
A ceasefire has been in place in the Iran conflict for just over a month. However, military tensions remain high.
US President Donald Trump has expressed optimism that an agreement could soon be reached with the leadership in Tehran to end the war.
