Ireland ditches Eurovision final broadcast in boycott over Israel participation

  • Ireland's national broadcaster, RTE, will replace its broadcast of the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest final on RTE2 with a classic episode of the comedy Father Ted, titled "A Song For Europe," this Saturday night.
  • This decision is part of a wider international boycott, with Ireland, Spain, and Slovenia refusing to send competitors to the 70th Eurovision and opting not to air the final, citing Israel’s ongoing military actions in Gaza.
  • RTE stated in September last year that Ireland's participation would be "unconscionable" given the "appalling loss of lives in Gaza," concerns over targeted killings of journalists, denial of access for international journalists, and the plight of hostages.
  • The boycott gained momentum following a European Broadcasting Union (EBU) general assembly, where new rules were discussed after concerns arose over significant public votes received by Israel in the 2025 contest.
  • Other nations, including the Netherlands and Iceland, are also not sending acts but will still broadcast the final, while Slovenia plans to air a series of documentaries themed "Voices of Palestine" during the contest.
