Ireland star explains decision to refuse to play against Israel

  • Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu has refused to play in his country's Uefa Nations League fixture against Israel in protest against “atrocities in the region”.
  • The 24-year-old explained on Instagram that his decision was based on personal principles regarding the killing of innocent people, while clarifying that his stance is not opposed to Israeli or Jewish people.
  • Bazunu's decision prompted debate within the squad, leading to delays in training and press conferences as several team-mates considered joining him in boycotting the match.
  • Following a squad vote in which 14 players voted to play and eight voted against, the Football Association of Ireland confirmed that the fixture in Debrecen will proceed.
  • The FAI stated that it respects the varied views of all squad members and appreciates the high level of sensitivity surrounding the upcoming fixtures.
