Multi-awarded Irish band The Script has released a new single, “Man in the Arena,” ahead of their album “The User’s Guide to Being Human,” set for release on August 14. The Philippines is also among the stops on their “Man in the Arena Tour,” with two shows scheduled on March 18 and 19, 2027, at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, marking another return to a country where the band has built a loyal fanbase over the years.
During a press conference in Manila on May 25, lead vocalist Danny O’Donoghue shared details about the upcoming album and tour. “The User’s Guide to Being Human” features 11 tracks centered on authentic human emotions.
“If you need something to remind you of the spectrum of feelings and emotions that make you feel human, this is it,” he shared.
Expanding on the album’s concept, O’Donoghue reflected that he had always thought of the future as a distant idea until he realized he was already living in it, a time when people often lose sight of the importance of authentic, soul-deep connection.
This realization inspired the album’s central message, encouraging listeners to value genuine relationships amid the complexities of modern life.
“You can take this album to a different planet and then still know what it was like to be human by listening to it,” he added.
That perspective also shaped the album’s creation. O’Donoghue revealed that he began writing in Los Angeles shortly after their “Satellites” tour concluded. During the songwriting and recording process, longtime collaborators Andrew Frampton, Steve Kipner and Jimbo Barry — who previously worked on hits such as “Hall of Fame,” “The Man Who Can’t Be Moved” and “Breakeven” — joined the project and helped shape the record’s direction and sound.
The album was also influenced by O’Donoghue’s personal experiences. After navigating the grief of losing his best friend and bandmate Mark Sheehan, he shared that he is gradually beginning to see a bit of light amid the difficult experience, a shift that has inspired his songwriting.
“I haven’t been this excited about an album in ages, there’s a sense of optimism that’s kind of come back into the band again,” O’Donoghue said.
He also teased a song titled “Living Our Life Without Me,” which he described as “The Man Who Can’t Be Moved” part two, drawing enthusiastic reactions from those in attendance.
“I didn’t meet the girl on the street, there’s a guy beside her, and I’m not going to ruin the story, but yes, it’s the continuation of that,” he explained.
Ahead of the album’s release, the band unveiled “Man In The Arena,” a song that reflects The Script’s signature anthemic pop-rock sound. Its lyrics focus on having the courage to face the world and draw inspiration from a speech by American President Theodore Roosevelt. Referencing Roosevelt’s famous “Citizenship in a Republic” speech, O’Donoghue said that honor belongs to those who step into the arena rather than those who remain on the sidelines passing judgment.
“It’s trying to be great even if he doesn’t make it, at least he dared to be great, and that is why I feel that that message needs to come through now more than ever,” he added.
Reflecting on the band’s journey, O’Donoghue said their global success and the challenges they encountered in the industry helped shape a more sincere approach to songwriting.
While their earlier songs primarily revolved around heartbreak, he shared that he now views them differently, appreciating them through the lens of the knowledge, maturity and wisdom gained through years of lived experience.
He also emphasized the importance of perseverance and staying true to oneself, principles that continue to guide the band in its craft.
As the press conference drew to a close, O’Donoghue revealed that the band is experimenting with new ways to visually express its music, including a micro-drama or a 15-minute music video.
Although he kept details under wraps, he confirmed that a video is already in production and may eventually be incorporated into their live performances. Fans can also look forward to The Script’s tour beginning in October, including the two-night concert at the Mall of Asia Arena on March 18 and 19, 2027.
