The Internal Revenue Service is offering a free webinar on April 14 to help taxpayers and professionals complete their returns on time. Scheduled just one day before the traditional filing deadline, the 30-minute session is designed to address common last-minute concerns and reduce filing errors.
The initiative comes as millions of Americans finalize their tax returns under time pressure. The IRS says the event will provide practical guidance and reminders, particularly as recent legislative changes continue to affect refunds and filing requirements.
A Focused Effort to Reduce Errors and Delays
The webinar will take place at 1 p.m. Eastern time and will include IRS experts discussing multiple topics related with the final stages of filing. According to an official IRS release, the goal is to provide “last-minute tips” that taxpayers can use to file and pay on time, without requiring lengthy consultations or in-person visits.
This outreach reflects a broader pattern seen each year as the filing deadline nears. Mistakes made in the final stretch, such as incorrect information or missing documentation, can lead to rejected returns, delayed refunds, or penalties. The IRS has emphasized that helping taxpayers avoid these issues remains a priority, especially during high-volume periods.
The agency also highlighted the impact of recent tax law changes. According to the IRS, provisions introduced under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act have contributed to higher refunds during the 2026 filing season. These include measures affecting income such as tips and overtime, as well as deductions for certain expenses and groups, including seniors.
Recent filing data underscores the scale of the season. According to IRS figures, more than 100 million individual federal income tax returns had been filed as of early April, with over 98 percent submitted electronically. Refund distribution has followed a similar trend, with about 98 percent of refunds issued via direct deposit, and the average refund reaching $3,462.
Multiple Free Resources Remain Available to Taxpayers
Beyond the webinar, the IRS continues to promote several free tools and services for those who have not yet filed. Electronic filing and direct deposit are strongly encouraged, as they remain the fastest way to submit returns and receive refunds. According to the agency, these methods also help reduce processing errors compared to paper filings.
One of the primary options isIRS Free File, which allows eligible taxpayers to prepare and submit federal returns at no cost using partner software. According to information published on IRS.gov, the program is generally available to individuals with adjusted gross incomes of $89,000 or less, while fillable forms remain accessible for all income levels.
In-person assistance is also available through long-standing programs such as Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Tax Counseling for the Elderly. These services provide free support to qualifying individuals, including lower-income taxpayers, older adults, and those with limited English proficiency. According to IRS program details, trained volunteers help prepare returns and ensure accuracy before submission.
The IRS notes that help is accessible through multiple channels, including online tools, phone support, and Taxpayer Assistance Centers, which are operating with extended hours through the end of the filing season. While the webinar itself does not offer continuing education credit, it is intended as a general informational resource for both individuals and tax professionals navigating the final days before the deadline.
