Is BB Gandanghari ready for the director’s chair?

BB Gandanghari is reportedly all set to cut her teeth as director of the Ateneo varsity player Rene Baterbonia’s biopic.

This aligns with her Bachelor of Arts in Entertainment Management, which she earned at an American film school, graduating summa cum laude.

In her recent guesting on “Fast Talk with Boy Abunda,” BB proudly said she could also branch out into producing, in addition to overseeing its creative and business aspects. She can also act in it, as she did during his active Rustom Padilla days as a Viva artist.

The very idea of taking the helm was the result of her serious conversation with Rene’s grieving mom at the wake in their home province. She came with her brother, Senator Robin Padilla.

BB is eyeing no less than Dawn Zulueta to play Rene’s mom. Other cast members have yet to be named for now.

While Dawn is a near-perfect choice for the mater dolorosa role, netizens are rooting for Sylvia Sanchez since she’s also a Visayan from Mindanao.

Arguably, this directorial debut may yet be BB’s long-overdue break. But isn’t it too soon for a first-timer who’s perceived to be wet behind the ears?

Hasn’t BB reexamined herself, realizing she needs to learn the ropes of the trade first? Why not take on the task of being an assistant director, or at the very least an observer with creative input during the film shoot?

Let’s face it, Rene’s film bio is no experimental undertaking, what with the legal complexities that surround the case. This cannot be a hit-or-miss attempt nor a fluke.

Having said that, the project had better land on the lap of a much more experienced, seasoned director. But since she can also produce it herself, BB is sure to fill in the creative gap.

We can only wish BB the best of luck, hoping it won’t be her first and last directorial assignment that will drown in the waters of oblivion.

As for her brother Robin, who’s one of the people bankrolling the project, here’s hoping he gets his money’s worth, though that is not his primary concern.

Just a realistic thought.
