Malaysia and Singapore are both known for their diverse food offerings, ranging from affordable street food to high-end café dining. However, a recent debate has raised questions about whether eating out in Malaysia is as affordable as it seems, especially when compared to Singapore in terms of purchasing power and average income.

A diner in Malaysia recently shared their experience of paying RM42 for a few pastries and a cup of coffee at a café. While this amount may seem reasonable at first glance, the comparison with Singapore paints a different picture. The same order in Singapore would cost around SGD20 (approximately RM63). On the surface, the Malaysian price appears lower, but the discussion took a turn when income levels were factored in. The average salary in Malaysia is slightly over RM5,000 per month, whereas in Singapore, it reaches around SGD6,000 per month. This has led to the argument that food prices in Malaysia, relative to income, may be less affordable than many assume.

On the other hand, some argue that a direct currency conversion is not a fair comparison. They point out that RM42 translates to about SGD12, which is still cheaper than the SGD20+ price for a similar meal in Singapore. From this perspective, the numbers reinforce the idea that Malaysia remains more affordable when looking strictly at cost.

Others who have lived in both countries argue that the reality is more nuanced. While Singapore has a higher cost of living overall, the feeling of paying RM20 or more for a single pastry in Malaysia seems disproportionate when taking local wages into account. Some also note that certain café and restaurant prices in Malaysia are approaching those of Singapore, despite the significant gap in earnings.

This ongoing debate highlights the importance of looking beyond simple currency comparisons and considering how wages and purchasing power shape perceptions of affordability. While Malaysia may still offer cheaper dining options, the rising cost of food in urban areas continues to spark concerns about affordability for the average consumer.
