Is it permissible to touch a dog as a Muslim? This burning question weighs heavily on the minds of many Malaysian-Muslims. In a recent interview, Ustaz Mohammad Abdul Razak addresses this very issue, offering clarity and guidance. He emphasizes the importance of understanding and compassion towards animals, advocating for a shift in how stray dogs are perceived and treated. Through his insights, Ustaz Mohammad aims to dispel ignorance and foster a more humane approach within the community.

Ustaz Mohammad Abdul Razak is a local religious teacher from Negeri Sembilan; he grew up in a conservative family where he was taught to fear dogs. “I was raised in the situation where I was taught to be scared of dogs…especially stray dogs”, he said. Despite this upbringing, he has become a self-professed animal lover and a vocal advocate for reforming Malaysia's animal cruelty laws.

In an interview with MyForeverDoggo, an online platform dedicated to finding homes for stray dogs, Ustaz Mohammad shared his concerns about the ignorance that leads to cruelty towards dogs. He recounted being chased by dogs but still feels deep pity for them. "As a religious person and an ustaz, I feel responsible for educating the public to provide a true understanding of homeless animals, especially dogs," he stated. “They are victims of discrimination and cruelty by ignorant people.”

He highlighted the numerous cases of abuse against stray dogs, including poisoning, beating, and burning, which continue despite efforts to spread awareness. Ustaz Mohammad emphasized the need for stronger enforcement against dog abuse, noting that perpetrators often face no legal repercussions. He believes that strong legal action and enforcement are crucial to stopping animal abuse in the country.

Furthermore, Ustaz Mohammad suggested that fatwas, or Islamic legal rulings, could help address the problem. He explained, “Aside from advocacy, advice, and education, if there is something we consider a problem, it might be the need for a fatwa to be changed.” For context, a fatwa is a ruling on a point of Islamic law given by a recognized authority.

Ustaz Mohammad expressed hope that Malaysians will develop a different perspective on the issue of touching dogs. He noted a growing phenomenon where many Malays and Muslims are now involved in dog rescue and welfare. "This is a return to fitrah, where humans return to their innate nature of compassion, love, and humanity, as created by Allah," he said. "Islam teaches us to be loving, and we should love all beings."

As for the question on whether it is permissible to touch a dog, the ustaz shares that it is permissible to touch a dog as long as there is a need. “When it comes to Malaysia, we respect what is used in Shafi'i school of jurisprudence (in Sunni Islam) and we (Malaysian-Muslims) don't purposely touch dogs unless there's a need. For example, I just found out that during rescue efforts, the dog's trust has to be gained. If the method of touch is needed for the dog to trust and be good to us, it can be carried out”, he said.

As we navigate the complexities of faith and compassion, Ustaz Mohammad Abdul Razak's insights remind us of the importance of empathy and understanding in our treatment of all living beings. His advocacy for animal welfare challenges us all to reconsider long-held beliefs and to approach the issue of touching dogs with both sensitivity and knowledge. In doing so, we can foster a community that respects both religious teachings and the inherent dignity of every creature. The question, then, is not just about permissibility, but about how we can embody the principles of kindness and humanity in our daily lives.
