Is the A31 still closed? Here’s everything we know after the New Forest fire

  • National Highways has warned motorists of delays as the A31 remains closed in both directions.
  • It comes as firefighters continue to battle a blaze in the New Forest, which was sparked by a vehicle fire on the A31.
  • On Tuesday morning, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Sevice posted on X: “Crews worked overnight to contain the New Forest fire, planning a larger response today. A31 remains closed in both directions—follow National Highways for diversions.”
  • According to National Highways, motorists “should use the following local diversion route and not follow their satnavs. They are also reminded to stick to the speed limits on local roads and be aware of the New Forest’s livestock, which can roam freely.”
  • Diversions are in place for those travelling both westbound and eastbound, while drivers have been told to “allow extra time” for their journeys and ensure they “have extra water and essential medicines” on them amid the hot weather.
