Shirley, a film released in 2024, March, focuses on Shirley Chisholm, whom Regina King is the film's main actor, focuses on the 1972 presidential campaign in the United States (US) and how she became the first woman to be elected to the Congress system and became the first woman to run for the presidency in the country.
When a film focuses on a biography standpoint, it's most of the time just telling more about what has happened in the past visually through a film and adding some things here and there.
Now, when watching this film, it felt nice to know a piece of history which has happened in the past, but when watching a piece of history, there are other ways to showcase it visually. Whether it's through a documentary, reading about it on a website, or watching a video online, these are ways a biography piece can be shown.
A good example of films which capture real-life moments would be sports films. Films such as Invictus, We Are Marshall, Rocky and more are some film examples which can capture the real-life moments of each event. Now, there might be a bit of biasness because I'm a sports fan, but We Are Marshall, which involves an American football team in West Virginia, was involved in a plane crash.
Some common themes of these sports films focus on the underdog element of a team and capture what's it like to perform at the big stage - which you can say is one of the reasons why I like sports films.
The film run time is almost 2 hours and it needed all that time to show what happened in the past, it just does not make sense to make it into a film. Each scene felt long, which was done to help build up drama and make people curious to watch more. It almost felt like a chore to watch and just to know what would happen.
A rating of the entire film? Well, I would give it a 4/10. But if you are a person who's into history, this film might be for you.
