I have been approach by my alumnus who is interested to undertake continuing professional development course in Islamic psychology, psychotherapy & counselling. Beyond this, it is also a good supporting resource for managers and head of departments to resolve mental and emotional conflicts among their various stakeholders. It should be a blend of contemporary psychology & Islamic psychology focusing on the biological basis of behavior grounded in Islamic teachings. In essence, Islamic psychology provides a balanced & comprehensive view of human nature, behaviors and experiences. Actually, Islam provides a balanced focus between universal principles of human behaviors (with its universal laws and the Shar'iah laws) and the individual differences.
I recall a tragic case on 20 August 2026, a 16-year-old student live-streamed himself shooting and killing two students in a classroom in Zamboanga at Southern Philippines, before turned the gun on himself. One male and one female were killed, both grade nine students. Eight others were injured, with 4 in critical condition, and the victims were students aged 14 to 17. The suspect, the son of Department of Education officials, who has taken the gun from his home safe. It also follows a high-profile incident in Thailand, where a student went on a shooting rampage at a school on the outskirt of the capital Bangkok. I realized the topic Islamic psychology has received growing amount of interest in the public and corporate sectors. Many Muslim psychologists have been educated in mostly Western universities. So, the concept of this course, reflected in the context and scope, attempts to address 3 main areas, these being the context, perspectives & applied psychology (clinical applications) from an Islamic approach. The aims to provide essential knowledge understanding of nature, psyche of human behavior, the subdisciplines of psychology including developmental, social, health, cognitive, biological abnormal psychology.
