Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s scheduled court proceedings were postponed to Aug 27 after he was unable to appear in court due to health reasons and remains under treatment at the National Heart Institute (IJN).
KUALA LUMPUR: Former prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s scheduled court proceedings were postponed to Aug 27 after he was unable to appear in court due to health reasons and remains under treatment at the National Heart Institute (IJN).
The Bera MP was scheduled to be charged under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court at 9am today. However, the charge was not read out and no plea was recorded.
His lawyer, Datuk Amer Hamzah Arshad, said the prosecution had registered the charge, but the proceedings could not continue because of Ismail Sabri’s medical condition.
“However, due to his health condition, the charge could not be read out and no plea could be recorded today.
“We explained to the judge and the prosecution what happened yesterday at the MACC headquarters. During the process, it was discovered that he had a health issue and had to be taken to IJN,” he told reporters at the Kuala Lumpur Courts Complex today.
Amer Hamzah said the former prime minister is scheduled to undergo a pacemaker procedure later today.
“In view of his condition, it was not practical for the charge to be read out at IJN. We therefore requested that the matter be adjourned to another date, and the court fixed Aug 27.”
He added that the proceedings on Aug 27 remain subject to Ismail Sabri’s health condition being stable.
Amer Hamzah also disclosed that Ismail Sabri suffered a fall about two weeks ago and was admitted to Pantai Hospital. He had already been scheduled to undergo a follow-up examination at IJN next Monday before Thursday’s incident at the MACC headquarters.
Members of the media had gathered at the court complex since early this morning in anticipation of the proceedings.
The charge against Ismail Sabri is understood to be linked to his declaration of assets.
He has previously been called in several times by the MACC to have his statement recorded regarding the asset declaration he submitted to the anti-graft agency.
The MACC is also investigating the former premier over alleged corruption and money laundering.
As part of the probe, the agency seized RM170 million in cash in various foreign currencies and confiscated 16kg of gold bars, estimated to be worth RM7 million, during raids on premises believed to have been used as “safe houses” following investigations into four of his former senior officers, who were arrested in February 2025.
