Former PM Ismail Sabri Yaakob will undergo a pacemaker procedure after a heart condition was detected, with his court proceedings postponed to August 27.
KUALA LUMPUR: Former prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob will undergo a pacemaker implantation procedure after a Holter monitor detected a heart condition while he was receiving treatment at the National Heart Institute (IJN), his lawyer revealed today.
His counsel, Datuk Amer Hamzah Arshad, said the development meant it was not practical for the charges against the Bera MP to be read at the IJN, as previously considered, because he needed to undergo the medical procedure.
According to Amer Hamzah, Ismail Sabri experienced health complications while attending an interview at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters yesterday.
He said the former prime minister had been at the MACC headquarters from 9am to 6pm before being rushed to the IJN for treatment.
“The doctors treating my client have confirmed that he is experiencing health problems.

Amer Hamzah said that following the findings, Ismail Sabri was scheduled to undergo a pacemaker implantation procedure after Friday prayers. He added that the former prime minister had been fasting in preparation for the procedure, which was expected to begin between 2pm and 3pm.
“We hope everything goes smoothly and that Datuk Seri Ismail recovers quickly,” he said.
Elaborating further, Amer Hamzah said Ismail Sabri had already been dealing with health issues after suffering a fall about two weeks ago, which resulted in his admission to Pantai Hospital.
“He was also scheduled to undergo a follow-up medical examination next Monday,” he said.
Although his immediate priority is medical treatment, Amer Hamzah said Ismail Sabri remains determined to clear his name once his health permits.
“Of course, he wants to clear his name. However, his main concern at the moment is his health.
“Let us all pray for his speedy recovery,” he said.
He added that once the procedure has been completed and Ismail Sabri’s condition has stabilised, the defence will be ready to appear in court so that the former prime minister can respond to the charges against him.
“For now, let him undergo the procedure first. Once everything is completed and his condition is stable, we will be better prepared to attend court and respond to the charges,” he said.
Earlier, the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court postponed the reading of the charges against Ismail Sabri to Aug 27, taking into account his health condition and ongoing treatment at the IJN.
Ismail Sabri is being investigated by the MACC over alleged corruption and money laundering linked to expenditure and the procurement of funds for the promotion and publicity of the Keluarga Malaysia programme during his tenure as prime minister.
As part of the investigation, the MACC has reportedly seized approximately RM170 million in cash in various currencies and confiscated 16kg of gold bullion valued at nearly RM7 million from several locations linked to the probe.
